There is a relatively limited amount of cross-national research that examines work and unemployment using a social psychological approach. I address this gap in the literature by presenting preliminary findings on this topic from my recent research in the Czech Republic. I also compare and contrast these findings to the results of my US research on unemployment. The current study’s preliminary results fall into three themes:

1. Czechs and people from the United States think differently about work and unemployment;
2. National history and current structure strongly influence how Czechs think about these topics;
3. Generational/age differences exist in how Czechs think about these topics.
